Process & Care
This handcrafted jewellery should be kept away from water, and it should not be worn while showering or swimming. This jewellery should not come into contact with creams or sprays such as moisturisers or perfumes, etc.
Earrings that have been blackened with liver of sulphur should not be treated with any silver polish or abrasive cloths. This is because the surface of the sterling silver has been oxidised and therefore it does not require polishing.
The oxidised sterling silver surface is ‘sealed’ with a thin layer of museum-grade conservation wax; however, the surface is expected to change over time as the jewellery is worn and handled. This gradual change to the surface of the metal is reminiscent of change, both positive and negative, that occurs to the landscape of the rangelands that inform the design of the jewellery.
If the wearer chooses to use butterflies, then the oxidised surface of the sterling silver wire hooks will wear off over time and return to its original silver colour. Each hook is cut shorter than the length of the oval drop for each pair of earrings, and therefore any wear on the longer section of the wire hook should not distract from the overall appearance of the earrings.
A jewellery polishing cloth can be used on earrings that are bright or brushed sterling silver, i.e. the pairs titled Rangelands Rain.
